The big black out

The whole state of Sarawak suffered a major black out last Saturday, maybe indicating that the state need to have 12 new dams to be built to cater for the state need to be an industrialized state. Well that may not be a good answer, we need more than just mega dams or any kind of state of the art infrastructure in order to be a truly industrialized state. We already saw a lot of bad examples here in Malaysia and a good one is our football standard despite we have one of the best kind of sports stadium in every states, but we failed to produce any result in sports particularly our football. Most of these state of the art stadium are left with third class maintenance that recently the Chelsea team could wait for 90 minutes for the game to finish, scaring of any injury due to the poor condition of the pitch.

To be a leader in industrialized nation, we need to prove that we can do just the same as industrialized countries like Japan especially. Maybe we are still lack behind in R & D but we need to be productive and any investment must have a maximum return in the shortest possible time. Through foreign investment we can acquire many technology transfer and know how and thus can utilize them for our nation building. Lately the level of productivity has gone down in Malaysia and it is time to check on this again. Maybe our dependence on foreign labor is too much, that our industry itself has lost its productivity, meaning too little work need too much money and labor to accomplish.

The same things goes to the infrastructure that we have. In related to the power issue, we already have too many independent power producer or IPP than in general opinion do not need to exist in the first place and why did they exist is another story. A lot of resources is being wasted by this IPP where those resources can be well channeled to the existing industries like the supply of gas where these industries can use gas for the co generation power supply. These will be a very good investment incentives for foreign investors as we know that energy supply is the main element of cost for high tech industry. It will improve the productivity in term of utility cost and will spur more investment in Malaysia.

In fact we failed to think for a long term result of a result that can give benefit to the whole nation. It will take time to for us to get back to the right track. We need to change at every levels, our working ethics, our attitude, our time management and our level of commitment towards our work. But sadly we began to accept this and say no choice, but there are choices. How many times we say to each other during a meeting or a wedding dinner that it is okay to be late because we practice Malaysia time. Are we proud that we have Malaysia time and being late 30 minutes for an appointment or dinner is something acceptable. I heard some Japanese say this. Do expect to wait for 30 minutes if they say a while because this is Malaysia. They are really people of nothing can be done so what to do. This is something that is very painful for the ears. Either we change or left behind. Maybe now we just happy being late by 30 minutes, but when we compare with the outside world, we are already behind by 30 years.
